Does AI Recommend Toronto Law Firms? We Tested ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI

The short version: we ran Toronto legal buyer queries through the four major AI answer engines on September 21, 2026. Yes, all four name specific Toronto firms, not just directories. The same small shortlist of firms keeps recurring across engines, and the engines pick them from a predictable set of sources: legal ranking directories, Google Business Profile and Maps data, the firms' own websites, and Reddit. If you run a Toronto firm, that set of sources is your map to getting named.

We do this kind of measurement every month for the city in our Toronto AI citation tracker. This piece drills into one high-value vertical: law.

How we tested (and the honest limits)

We queried four surfaces: ChatGPT (logged-out, the public default a searcher sees), Perplexity (default), Gemini (logged in, with web search), and Google AI Overviews (Canada region). We ran representative buyer queries across three practice areas, personal injury, family and divorce, and corporate ("best law firm in Toronto"), plus a "who should I hire" phrasing, and logged which firms each engine named and which sources it cited.

Two honest limits, because a study is only worth what its caveats admit. This is a focused field test on a single date, not a large statistical sample. And AI answers shift with phrasing, personalization, location, and time, so each engine will name a somewhat different set on a different day. Treat the specific firm lists below as a snapshot of what these engines surfaced, not as a ranking or an endorsement. What is stable, and what matters, is the pattern.

Finding 1: All four engines name specific firms, not just directories

A widely cited 2026 US legal study (5WPR) found AI tended to recommend legal directories rather than individual firms. In Toronto, we saw the opposite. Every engine named specific firms readily.

For "best personal injury lawyer in Toronto":

  • ChatGPT rendered a Google-Maps-style widget listing Bogoroch & Associates (4.9), Howie Sacks & Henry (4.8), McLeish Orlando (4.7), Neinstein (4.7), Gluckstein (5.0), and Auger Hollingsworth (4.9), then cited Lexpert and Best Law Firms.
  • Perplexity named eight firms in text (Howie Sacks & Henry, Bogoroch, McLeish Orlando, Neinstein, Thomson Rogers, Oatley Vigmond, Gluckstein, Boland Romaine), citing Canadian Lawyer.
  • Gemini named McLeish Orlando, Neinstein, Gluckstein, Bogoroch, Howie Sacks & Henry, and Diamond & Diamond, citing Leaders in Law and Best Law Firms.
  • Google's AI Overview showed a map naming Neinstein (4.8, 592 reviews), Gluckstein, and McLeish Orlando (4.7, 190 reviews), with sources including Leaders in Law and a Reddit thread.

So the good news for firms: the AI door is open. These engines will say your name.

Finding 2: The same small shortlist recurs across every engine

For personal injury, five firms appeared across all four engines: Neinstein, Gluckstein, McLeish Orlando, Bogoroch, and Howie Sacks & Henry. For corporate, the same Bay Street names recurred across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini: Blakes, Stikeman Elliott, Torys, and McCarthy Tétrault. Family law was looser, but Epstein Cole and Stanchieri Family Law showed up across engines.

There is, in effect, an AI consensus shortlist per practice area. Being on it is the entire game, because the engines converge on a handful of names rather than surfacing a long tail.

Finding 3: Engines pick who to name in two different ways

The four engines split into two camps, and the difference tells you what to optimize.

  • Map-grounded engines (ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews) render a Google Maps place widget with star ratings and review counts, then add directory text. For these, your Google Business Profile, categories, ratings, and review volume are doing the work. In the family-law test, ChatGPT led with Nazarian Law at 4.9 stars and 439 reviews, a review-heavy consumer firm.
  • Directory-grounded engines (Perplexity and Gemini) answer in text and cite legal ranking directories plus firm websites. In the same family-law test, Perplexity led instead with Doyle's Guide "preeminent" lawyers such as Epstein Cole and McCarthy Hansen, the peer-ranked elite.

The tell: map-grounded engines reward review volume, directory-grounded engines reward peer rankings. A firm that is strong in one but weak in the other will appear in some engines and not others. That single insight explains most of the variation we saw.

Finding 4: The sources every engine leans on

Across all four engines, the same short list of source types did the deciding:

  • Legal ranking directories: Best Law Firms Canada, Lexpert, Chambers Canada, Canadian Lawyer, Doyle's Guide, and Leaders in Law, plus review aggregators like TrustAnalytica, Best in Hood, and Martindale.
  • Google Business Profile and Maps data with reviews, which drive the map widgets in ChatGPT and Google's AI Overview.
  • The firm's own website, cited directly, especially for "who should I hire" phrasing, often alongside the Law Society of Ontario directory.
  • Reddit, which appeared as a cited source inside Google's AI Overview.

If your firm is absent from those surfaces, you are invisible to the systems assembling the answer.

Finding 5: On Google, ads and the map pack still sit above the AI answer

One important nuance specific to Google. For "best personal injury lawyer in Toronto," Google showed sponsored ads and a local pack first, and the AI Overview appeared below them. Google's fuller conversational answer lives in a separate AI Mode tab. So on Google for a commercial legal query, paid search and local visibility still occupy the top of the page, with the AI Overview as an additional layer rather than a replacement. The pure AI assistants (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini) lead with the AI answer; Google, for now, does not.

What this means if you run a Toronto firm

The route to the AI consensus shortlist is no longer a mystery. It is the sum of the sources above.

  1. Get into the ranking directories AI cites. Best Law Firms Canada, Lexpert, Chambers, Canadian Lawyer, Doyle's Guide, and Leaders in Law are the connective tissue across every engine. Directory presence is table stakes.
  2. Win on Google Business Profile. A complete, accurate profile with correct categories and a deep, current base of reviews drives the map widgets in ChatGPT and Google's AI Overview, where review volume visibly matters.
  3. Make your own website citable. Publish answer-first pages an engine can quote cleanly, since firm sites appear as direct sources. Our AEO checklist is the how-to.
  4. Do not ignore Reddit and third-party mentions. They surface as citations, particularly in Google's AI Overview, and they are hard for a competitor to fake.
  5. Keep paid and local search strong on Google. Ads and the local pack still rank above the AI Overview for commercial legal queries, so the AI layer adds to your Google strategy rather than replacing it.

None of this is about gaming an algorithm. It is about being present, accurate, and well-reviewed on the exact surfaces these engines read. That is answer engine optimization applied to law. If you want to see where your own firm currently stands, start by checking whether AI can reach and read your site.

FAQ

Does ChatGPT recommend specific law firms in Toronto? Yes. In our September 2026 test, ChatGPT named specific Toronto firms for legal queries, usually via a Google Maps place widget with star ratings, alongside citations to legal directories like Lexpert and Best Law Firms.

Which sources does AI use to recommend lawyers? Across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews, the recurring sources were legal ranking directories (Best Law Firms, Lexpert, Chambers, Canadian Lawyer, Doyle's Guide, Leaders in Law), Google Business Profile and Maps data with reviews, the firms' own websites, and Reddit.

Do legal directories still matter for AI search? Yes. Ranking directories were the connective tissue across every engine we tested, so being listed and ranked in them is one of the strongest levers a firm has for AI visibility.

How do I get my law firm recommended by AI? Get into the legal ranking directories, build an accurate Google Business Profile with a deep, current base of reviews, publish answer-first content on your own site, and cultivate genuine third-party mentions including Reddit. Those are the surfaces the engines read.

Does AI replace Google for finding a lawyer? Not yet. On Google, sponsored ads and the local pack still appeared above the AI Overview for a commercial legal query, so AI is currently an added layer. The standalone assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity, however, lead with an AI recommendation.
