Does AI Recommend Toronto Accountants?
We asked the four major AI answer engines to recommend a Toronto accountant. Three named firms, Google named none, and a clear consensus shortlist kept recurring.

The short version: we asked the four major AI answer engines to recommend a Toronto accountant on October 17, 2026. Three of them named firms without hesitation. Google named none. The set of firms shifted almost entirely depending on whether we asked for "best accountant," "best accountant for small business," or "best tax accountant." And a small shortlist of names kept surfacing across engines, which tells a Toronto CPA firm exactly where the open seat is.
This is the accountants entry in a series. See the companion studies on HVAC companies, med spas, law firms, and real estate agents, plus the monthly Toronto AI citation tracker.
How we tested, and the honest limits
We queried four surfaces: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google in the Canada region. We ran three intents, a head query ("best accountant in Toronto") and two sub-intents ("best accountant for small business in Toronto" and "best tax accountant in Toronto"), and logged which firms each engine named and which sources it leaned on.
The caveats first. This is a focused field test on one date across a few query shapes, not a large statistical sample. ChatGPT and Gemini ran through a signed-in account, so some personalization is possible. The firm names below are public outputs these engines produced, drawn from directories, Maps, and the web. Read them as a snapshot of machine behaviour, not a ranking or an endorsement from us. The pattern is the point.
Finding 1: Three engines name firms. Google does not
Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini for the best accountant in Toronto and you get a shortlist, not a lecture. ChatGPT returned five firms with Google ratings and review counts attached, led by Gondaliya CPA at a 5.0 across about 880 reviews. Gemini returned a set organised by business type, from startups to family enterprises to national firms. Perplexity named four and framed the whole thing as "depends on what you need," then gave a table.
Google was the holdout. For "best accountant in Toronto" it produced no AI Overview at all, just sponsored ads and a local Maps pack. More on that below, because it matters.
Finding 2: The named set changes almost completely with intent
This is the finding a CPA firm cannot afford to miss.
On Perplexity, the head query named Stern Cohen LLP, GTA Accounting Group, SRJ Chartered Professional Accountants, and BBS Accounting. Switch the ask to "small business" and the answer turned over to a different group: Gondaliya CPA, Robey CPA, Leonard Tam CPA, Capstone LLP, and FShad CPA. Ask for a "tax accountant" and new specialists appeared, Faris CPA for CRA audits and Webtaxonline for cross-border filings, next to the recurring names.
So being the engine's pick for "best accountant" buys you nothing when a founder types "accountant for my small business" or an expat types "cross-border tax Toronto." Those are separate competitions with separate winners. You earn each one with a page and a profile built for that exact intent, not with a single generic services page.
Finding 3: ChatGPT reads Maps. Perplexity and Gemini read directories
The grounding split cleanly by engine, and it changes where you invest.
ChatGPT answered from a Google Maps and Places panel: every firm came with a star rating, a review count, an address, and a phone number, and the review numbers were the stated reason for the pick (Gondaliya 5.0 across 880, BBS Accounting 5.0 across 88, Accountor 4.9 across 65). Perplexity and Gemini, by contrast, leaned on directory and roundup sources, pages like thebesttoronto, bestinhood, clearlyrated, and "The Top in Canada," plus each firm's own site. Gemini cited those roundups directly.
The practical read: to win ChatGPT you need a strong, high-review Google Business Profile. To win Perplexity and Gemini you need to be on the accounting roundups and directories those engines quote, with a site that states your specialties plainly.
Finding 4: Accountants have a real cross-engine consensus shortlist
Unlike some verticals we have tested, the overlap here was strong. A handful of firms recurred across engines rather than each engine inventing its own list.
Gondaliya CPA was the clearest case, surfacing as ChatGPT's top pick, inside Gemini's set, and on Perplexity's sub-intent answers. SRJ Chartered Professional Accountants appeared on both Perplexity and Gemini. Stern Cohen LLP appeared on both Perplexity and Gemini. BBS Accounting showed up on Perplexity and ChatGPT, and Capstone LLP on Perplexity and Gemini.
That convergence means a few firms have built enough cross-web presence, in reviews and directories and their own content, that the engines keep landing on them. For everyone else it is a clear target: these are the names to study, because they show what "enough presence" currently looks like in this category.
Finding 5: On Google, there is no AI Overview, just ads and a map
For "best accountant in Toronto," Google generated no AI answer. What it showed was a block of sponsored ads (ReInvestWealth, Plug CPA, Dean and Associates, JPM Partners) followed by a local Maps pack naming firms like Kennedy Tax and Accounting, at a 4.8 across roughly 1,200 reviews, and GTA Professional Accounting.
Two things worth noticing. The AI answer layer that actually names accountants lives in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini today, not in Google search. And Google's own local pack named firms the AI engines mostly did not, which is a reminder that the Maps pack and the AI shortlist are separate contests. You want to be in both, and they reward overlapping but not identical signals.
What this means if you run a Toronto accounting firm
- Build review depth, then keep it fresh. ChatGPT and Google both surfaced the highest-reviewed firms and quoted the numbers. A deep, current base of Google reviews is close to a prerequisite for being named. Our guide on ranking a service business on Google Maps covers the groundwork.
- Get onto the roundups Perplexity and Gemini read. Pages like the Toronto accounting "best of" directories are not vanity listings. They are the sources these engines cite, so a complete, accurate presence on each is foundational.
- Write intent-specific pages, not one services page. Because the named set changes between "best accountant," "small business accountant," and "tax accountant," you need distinct, answer-first pages for small-business accounting, personal and corporate tax, CRA-audit help, and cross-border filings. Each is its own competition.
- State your specialty in plain text. The engines surfaced the CRA-audit specialist and the cross-border specialist because those firms say so clearly. If you own a niche, name it near the top of the page, in words.
- Study the consensus names. Gondaliya CPA, SRJ, Stern Cohen, BBS, and Capstone keep recurring. Reverse-engineer why: their review base, their directory presence, their on-site clarity. That is the bar.

Limitations
This is one field test on one date, October 17, 2026, across three query intents. ChatGPT and Gemini were accessed signed in, so personalization may have nudged results. AI answers move with phrasing, location, and time. The named firms are public outputs from these engines, reported exactly as shown, and are neither a ranking nor an endorsement by Stratezik. The pattern, not the particular names, is the finding.
FAQ
Does ChatGPT recommend specific accountants in Toronto? Yes. In our October 2026 testing, ChatGPT returned a shortlist of Toronto accounting firms from a Google Maps panel, each with a star rating and review count, led by a firm at 5.0 across about 880 reviews. Perplexity and Gemini also named firms. Google was the exception, showing ads and a local Maps pack rather than an AI Overview for this query.
How do I get my accounting firm recommended by AI? Work on what each engine reads. For ChatGPT, build a high-review Google Business Profile, since it quotes ratings and review counts. For Perplexity and Gemini, get onto the Toronto accounting roundups and directories they cite, with a site that states your specialties plainly. Then build intent-specific pages for small business, tax, CRA audits, and cross-border work, because each query names a different set.
Why does AI name different accountants for "best accountant" versus "small business accountant"? Because they are different intents, and AI engines fan a prompt into intent-specific sub-searches. In our test the head query and the small-business query shared almost no names. You earn each intent separately, with content built for it, rather than assuming a win on one carries to the other.
Does Google show an AI Overview for "best accountant in Toronto"? Not as of October 2026. Google returned sponsored ads and a local Maps pack instead. The AI answer layer that names accounting firms currently lives in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini, so those are where AEO effort pays off for this category.
