ChatGPT Ads vs Google Search Ads (2026)
A side-by-side comparison grounded in our own campaign data: ChatGPT Ads ran about 10x cheaper per click, but Google still wins proven high-intent demand. How to split them.

The short version: for most Toronto businesses, this is not an either-or. Google Search Ads capture demand that already exists, at scale, with the most mature measurement in advertising. ChatGPT Ads reach people mid-conversation about a problem, right now, in an auction that is still cheap because almost nobody is bidding. The honest move for 2026 is to keep Google as your proven workhorse and test ChatGPT while the window is open, because on our own campaigns the clicks there ran roughly 10 times cheaper, and that gap will not last.

The one-line verdict
Run Google to catch the demand that exists. Test ChatGPT to reach demand as it forms, before the auction fills up. Few businesses should pick only one in 2026.
Side by side
| What matters | ChatGPT Ads | Google Search Ads |
|---|---|---|
| Cost (CPM) | $35 on our campaigns | ~$250 comparable, so about 7x more |
| Effective click cost | Roughly 10x cheaper on our accounts | The baseline everyone measures against |
| What the person is doing | Mid-conversation about a problem, pre-decision | Typed an explicit query, often ready to act |
| Targeting | Context hints, the themes of a conversation | Keywords, audiences, decades of controls |
| Reach and volume | Small today, a fraction of logged-in users in four countries | Massive, global, every intent you can name |
| Measurement | Conversion tracking live, CPA bidding still rolling out, ads shown only to logged-in users | Full conversion, CPA, and ROAS bidding, mature attribution |
| The auction | Uncrowded, few advertisers, and closing | Saturated, fought over for twenty years |
| Maturity | Emerging beta, specs still shifting | Stable and well documented |
| Best at | Cheap early reach in conversational categories | Capturing proven, high-intent demand at scale |
Where ChatGPT Ads win right now
The whole case is the auction. Scarce inventory plus very few advertisers is the textbook early window, and the numbers show it.
On our own campaigns we ran a $35 CPM against a $250 Google Search comparison, which is 86% cheaper impressions, and our click-through rate came in 46% higher than our own Google Search. Put those together and the effective cost per click, which is just CPM divided by CTR, works out roughly 10 times cheaper. That is not a forecast. It is division on our account.
Other early spenders report the same shape. TripleDart measured B2B SaaS CPCs of $3 to $8 against about $30 on Google, at comparable click-through. David Melamed drove CPC down to $0.40 after optimising creative, and found CPM floors as low as $8 where the platform was suggesting $60. The through-line across every credible report: click rates near search, click costs a fraction of competitive Google categories, and conversion quality that holds because the person was literally mid-conversation about the thing you sell.
There is a macro number behind it too. CallRail reports 37% of consumers now start their searches with AI tools. The audience moved first and the ad budgets are still catching up. That lag is the opportunity, and OpenAI has already started testing multi-advertiser placements, which is the first crack in the cheap-auction advantage.
Where Google Search Ads win, and it is not close
None of that makes ChatGPT the better channel for most spend today. Google wins the things that actually run a business.
Volume is the big one. Google serves every intent, in every market, at a scale ChatGPT Ads cannot touch, where ads currently reach only a fraction of logged-in users across four countries. Intent is the second. Someone who types "emergency plumber Scarborough" is ready to buy in minutes, and Google has spent twenty years learning to price that moment. And measurement is the third. Google gives you full conversion, target-CPA, and ROAS bidding with mature attribution, while ChatGPT's conversion bidding is still rolling out and its login-gated delivery makes clean measurement harder.
If your growth depends on catching people at the exact moment of high purchase intent, and on being able to optimise to a cost per acquisition with confidence, Google is not the safe choice. It is the correct one.
The honest catch with ChatGPT Ads
We are bullish, and we will still tell you the limits, because pretending they do not exist is how people lose money.
Reach is genuinely small. Ads show only to logged-in users on the Free and Go tiers, in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and only a fraction of eligible users see an ad on any given day. Measurement is immature, since conversion bidding is not the norm yet and the login gate complicates attribution. The specs keep moving, with headline and description limits shifting between beta releases. And the cheap auction is temporary by design, because once multi-advertiser placements ship broadly, one advertiser per conversation becomes several and the price advantage decays. You are buying an early-mover edge, not a finished channel.
How to decide for your business
The right split depends mostly on what you sell and how people look for it.
Conversational and discovery-led categories are the strongest fit for testing ChatGPT now: B2B SaaS, e-commerce and DTC, beauty, travel, online education, and professional services, where buyers genuinely ask an assistant for advice before they decide. Local, urgent, "near me" trades are the weakest fit, because that demand is explicit and Google already owns the moment, so there you test ChatGPT with small experimental budget and keep Google as the core. We broke this down category by category in our Toronto ChatGPT Ads industries read, and the benchmarks behind these numbers sit in our ChatGPT Ads benchmarks post.
A simple test: say your best customer's problem out loud as a question to ChatGPT. If a sponsored card for a business like yours would genuinely help the person who asked, you belong in that auction early. If the honest answer is that they would rather just type your service and a city into Google, start there.
The move most Toronto businesses should make in 2026
- Keep Google as the workhorse. It captures the demand that already exists, at the scale and with the measurement your revenue depends on. Do not move core budget off it on a trend.
- Carve out a real test budget for ChatGPT now. Not a token amount. Enough to learn, while clicks are still a fraction of Google's price and the auction is thin.
- Match the channel to the intent. Explicit, ready-to-buy searches go to Google. Early, conversational, problem-aware moments are where ChatGPT earns its place.
- Treat the ChatGPT window as expiring. The cheap auction is a feature of being early, and OpenAI is already testing the change that ends it. The learning you bank now is the moat later.
- Measure both honestly. Hold ChatGPT to real conversions, not vanity clicks, even though its reporting is younger. A cheap click that does not convert is still a cost.

FAQ
Are ChatGPT Ads cheaper than Google Ads? On our own campaigns, yes, and by a wide margin in 2026. We ran a $35 CPM against a $250 Google Search comparison, 86% lower, with a 46% higher click-through rate, which compounds to roughly 10 times cheaper effective clicks. Independent reports from TripleDart and David Melamed show the same pattern. The caveat is that this gap exists because the ChatGPT auction is still uncrowded, and OpenAI is already testing changes that will narrow it.
Should I move my budget from Google Ads to ChatGPT Ads? For most businesses, no, not move, add. Google captures existing high-intent demand at a scale and measurement maturity ChatGPT cannot match yet. The smart play in 2026 is to keep Google as the proven core and carve out a genuine test budget for ChatGPT while clicks there are cheap and the auction is thin, then let real conversion data decide the split.
What kind of business is ChatGPT Ads best for? Conversational and discovery-led categories where people ask an assistant for advice before deciding: B2B SaaS, e-commerce, beauty, travel, online education, and professional services. Local, urgent, "near me" trades are a weaker fit because that demand is explicit and Google already owns it, so there you test small and keep Google as the core.
How do ChatGPT Ads actually appear? As a single, clearly labelled sponsored card shown below ChatGPT's answer, after it has finished responding, matched to the conversation's context in a relevance-weighted auction. The ad never changes what ChatGPT says. Full setup, specs, and bidding details are in our ChatGPT Ads cheat sheet.
