How to Get Your Toronto Business Recommended by ChatGPT (We Tested 90 Buying Questions)

Two AI assistants, 90 Toronto buying questions. They named a local business 89% of the time but agreed only half the time. How to be the one they pick.

The short version:

  • We asked two AI assistants the exact questions a Toronto buyer asks before spending money. Things like "best dentist in Scarborough," "reliable plumber in downtown Toronto," and "best HVAC company in North York." Across 90 questions, the AI named a specific local business 89% of the time. This channel recommends real businesses, constantly, and most of them are independents rather than big chains.
  • The catch: the two assistants rarely agreed. For 51% of the questions, ChatGPT and Claude named completely different businesses. Being the name ChatGPT gives is no guarantee you are the name Claude or Perplexity gives.
  • Where the two engines did agree, it was almost always the dominant business in the category, the one with the deepest review history and the strongest "best of" presence.
  • You cannot buy your way into the answer itself, only into the ad slot beneath it. The recommendation is earned, and the signals that earn it are reviews, ratings, third-party roundups, and a site the AI can actually read.

Why we ran this

We kept reading that AI search was going to reshape how customers find local businesses. Nobody was showing what the AI actually says. So we tested it.

We wrote 90 buying questions a real customer in Toronto, Scarborough, North York, or Mississauga would type, across 18 industries, from dentists and HVAC to lawyers and movers. Then we ran the same 90 questions through two assistants: ChatGPT on its free tier, and Claude with live web search. For every answer we recorded what it named, whether the business was local, and how the AI justified the pick.

This is the organic half of the study. We published a separate piece on who is paying for the ad slot beneath these answers, and the short version there is that almost nobody local is. This piece is about the answer itself, which is the part you cannot buy.

Finding 1: AI recommends local businesses far more often than people assume

The fear is that AI search names only the giants. That is not what we found. Across 90 questions, ChatGPT gave a specific, named answer to 88 of them. Claude named at least one Toronto or GTA business in 80 of the 90, which is 89%.

These were not all household names. The answers were full of genuine independents. For "where can I get gel nails done in Scarborough," ChatGPT named Liquid Nails Scarborough, Michell Le Nail, and Hella Nails N Pedi. For "reliable plumber in downtown Toronto," Claude named True Service Plumbing and Plumber To Your Door. For "best small business lawyer in Toronto," both named Jonathan Kleiman, a solo practitioner, ahead of any large firm.

If you run a small local business and you have assumed AI search is only for the big players, that assumption is costing you. The AI is looking for a good local answer. The question is whether it finds you.

Finding 2: The two engines agreed only half the time

Here is the result that surprised us most. We took every question where both assistants named a local business, then checked whether they named any of the same ones. They overlapped on 49% of questions. On the other 51%, ChatGPT and Claude named entirely different businesses.

The plumber question is a clean example. ChatGPT named Mr. Rooter, Mister Plumber, and Absolute Draining and Plumbing. Claude named True Service Plumbing, Plumbers Direct, and Plumber To Your Door. Same city, same question, asked minutes apart, and not one business appeared on both lists.

This matters more than any single ranking. There is no "the AI recommends us." Each engine builds its answer from different sources, and the answer shifts from one run to the next. A business owner who checks ChatGPT once, sees their name, and feels safe is reading one ticket in a much larger draw. The only durable position is to be recommendable enough that you keep surfacing across engines and across runs, not to win a single lottery.

Finding 3: Where the engines agreed, it was the category's clear leader

The 49% where both engines did agree is just as instructive. The businesses they named in common were the dominant ones in their field. Jonathan Kleiman for small business law. BrainStation for tech education. Cornerstone Physiotherapy in North York. Imperial Heating and Cooling for furnace work. Bochner Eye Institute for eye care. Archer Dental for whitening.

These are the businesses that have spent years building the thing AI looks for: a deep, consistent track record that shows up everywhere the AI checks. When two independent systems reach for the same name, it is usually because that name has the strongest evidence behind it. That is not luck, and it is not a trick. It is accumulation.

Finding 4: The AI told us why it picked each business

We did not have to guess at the signals. The assistants explained their own reasoning, and the same words came up over and over.

Reviews and star ratings appeared in the answers constantly. One plumber recommendation led with "a perfect 5.0-star rating from 696 reviews." Across the answers, review and star-rating language showed up dozens of times, and "best" or "top-rated" framing another 29 times. The assistants leaned on third-party roundups and directory listings, the "best dentist in Scarborough" style articles, to assemble their shortlists. And they favoured businesses whose location and service were stated plainly, so the match to the question was obvious.

None of those signals are paid. All of them are earnable. That is the whole opportunity.

Finding 5: Sometimes AI names nobody, and that is an open door

On two questions, ChatGPT declined to name anyone and gave a generic answer instead. "How do I incorporate a business in Ontario" returned a do-it-yourself explanation with no firm attached. "Who to call for a basement renovation in the GTA" returned general advice with no contractor.

When the AI goes generic, the category has no obvious answer yet. For a business in that space, that is the easiest possible opening. You are not displacing an incumbent, because there isn't one. You are filling a blank the AI is actively trying to fill.

How to become the business AI names

Pulling the findings together, here is the work, in the order it pays off.

Build the review record, because it is the signal AI reaches for first. The businesses that got named had real review depth on Google and the platforms that matter for their category. This is slow and it is boring and it is the highest-return thing on this list. Ask every satisfied customer, make it easy, and keep at it.

Get into the roundups the AI reads. The "best X in Toronto" articles, the local directories, the category-specific lists. The assistants assembled their shortlists from these. If you are not in them, you are invisible to the step where the AI builds its options.

State your location and service in plain language. The businesses that got matched cleanly were the ones whose site and listings said exactly what they do and where, with no decoding required. "Furnace repair in downtown Toronto" should find a page that says furnace repair in downtown Toronto.

Make sure the AI can actually read your site. This is the part most businesses miss. AI crawlers do not run JavaScript, so a site that only renders in a browser is blank to them. They look for structured data, an answer-first homepage, and a few other machine-readable signals. If those are missing, you can have the best reviews in the city and still not make the shortlist, because the AI cannot parse you.

How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

Earn the signals AI looks for. Build a deep review record on Google and your category's main platforms, get listed in the "best of" roundups and directories the AI reads, state your location and service in plain language, and make sure your website is readable by AI crawlers, which do not run JavaScript. In our test, the businesses AI named consistently had all four.

Does ChatGPT recommend small local businesses or only big brands?

It recommends local independents far more than people expect. In our 90-question test, the answers were full of solo lawyers, neighbourhood nail salons, and independent plumbers, often ahead of national chains.

If I show up in ChatGPT, will I show up in other AI assistants too?

Not necessarily. In our test, ChatGPT and Claude named completely different businesses on 51% of questions. Each engine builds its answer from different sources, so you have to earn recommendability broadly rather than win one engine once.

Can I pay to appear in a ChatGPT answer?

No. You can buy the sponsored ad slot that appears beneath the answer, but the recommendation inside the answer is earned through the signals above. The two are separate.

Why can't AI find my business even though I rank on Google?

Methodology and limitations

We tested 90 buying questions across 18 GTA industries, five per industry, written to mirror how a real local customer phrases a purchase-stage search. The full prompt set and both engines' results are available on request.

The ChatGPT answers were recorded manually on the free tier on June 19, 2026. The Claude answers were generated with live web search and scored by script. To measure agreement between the engines, we checked whether the businesses one engine named also appeared in the other engine's answer for the same question, using normalized name matching, which is approximate by nature.

This is a snapshot. AI answers change between runs, vary by user, and improve over time, so the specific names will not hold, but the pattern is the point: AI recommends local businesses often, the engines disagree frequently, and the businesses that win are the ones with the deepest earned signals. We will run this again and report what moves.
