AI Search Statistics 2026: Usage, Citations, and What It Means for Your Business
A sourced reference of AI search statistics for 2026: how many people use ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI, how AI summaries change clicks, how AI decides who to cite, and what it means for business. Every figure attributed.

The short version: AI search went mainstream in 2026. About half of US adults now use AI chatbots and 44 percent have used ChatGPT (Pew Research). ChatGPT reports well over 800 million weekly users, and Google's Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users. When Google shows an AI summary, the click-through to websites drops from 15 percent to 8 percent (Pew). For businesses, the game has moved from ranking to being named: brands cited inside an AI answer get about 120 percent more organic clicks (Seer Interactive). Below is the data, with a source and a date on every number.
A note on how we built this, because it matters for a statistics page: OpenAI and Google publish almost no official performance data, so most figures come from third parties. We label each source by type, we verified the Pew numbers against the live pages ourselves, and we left out several widely-circulated stats we could not trace to a primary source. A statistics page with one invented number is worse than no page.
How many people use AI search in 2026
Adoption is now mainstream, not early-adopter.
- About half of US adults now use AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot, up from about a third in 2024, and roughly a quarter use them daily. Source: Pew Research Center, survey of 5,119 US adults, February 2026.
- 44 percent of US adults have used ChatGPT, more than double the 18 percent of 2023. Source: Pew Research Center, February 2026.
- 42 percent of US adults say they use chatbots to search for information, the single most common use, ahead of work tasks. Source: Pew Research Center, February 2026.
- ChatGPT reached 800 million weekly active users (Sam Altman, OpenAI DevDay, October 2025) and about 900 million by February 2026, with 1 billion reported mid-2026.
- Google's Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly active users. Source: Google, official blog, August 2026.
- Perplexity handled 780 million queries in a single month (CEO Aravind Srinivas, June 2025). Microsoft 365 Copilot passed 30 million paid seats (Microsoft earnings, 2026).
For share of the AI market itself, Similarweb estimates ChatGPT's share of generative-AI visits fell from 76 percent to 53 percent between June 2025 and May 2026 as Gemini rose to roughly 27 percent and Claude to about 9 percent. Similarweb labels its figures estimates, so treat them as directional.
How AI search changes clicks
The headline finding, from a neutral source, is that AI summaries reduce clicks to websites.
- When a Google search shows an AI summary, users click a result link in 8 percent of visits, versus 15 percent when there is no summary, nearly half as often. They click a link inside the summary itself just 1 percent of the time. Source: Pew Research Center, July 2025, from the browsing activity of 900 US adults.
- Users end their session entirely on 26 percent of pages with an AI summary, versus 16 percent without. Source: Pew, July 2025.
- 58 percent of users encountered at least one AI summary in March 2025, and Pew found 88 percent of those summaries cited three or more sources. Source: Pew, July 2025.
- Google AI Overviews appeared on roughly 6.5 percent of US queries in January 2025, rising to about 13 percent by March 2025, with 88 percent of triggers being informational queries. Source: Semrush study, 2025.
- Roughly 95 percent of ChatGPT users still also use Google (Similarweb estimate, December 2025). AI search is additive today, not a wholesale replacement, which is why you cannot abandon either surface.
How AI decides who to cite
This is the part that matters if you want to be in the answers, and it is where AEO (answer engine optimization) lives.
- AI Overviews cite about 5 sources on average, and 90 percent cite 8 or fewer, across 405,576 overviews. Google's newer AI Mode leans wider, averaging about 7 domains. Sources: Surfer SEO (August 2026) and Semrush (July 2025), both vendor studies.
- Classic SEO still feeds AI: between 52 percent (Surfer, 405,576 overviews) and 76 percent (Ahrefs, 1.9 million citations) of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in Google's top 10. The two studies differ by method and date, but both point the same way. Ranking is not obsolete; it is the on-ramp.
- Brand mentions across the web correlate more strongly with AI Overview visibility than links do. Ahrefs measured a Spearman correlation of 0.664 for brand web mentions, versus 0.326 for domain rating and 0.218 for backlinks, across 75,000 brands. The study is explicit that correlation is not causation and that all factors are moderate to weak, and that 26 percent of brands had zero AI Overview mentions. Source: Ahrefs, May 2025, vendor study.
- Each engine draws from a different pool. Profound, tracking 680 million citations, found ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia, while Perplexity and Google AI lean heavily on Reddit and YouTube; across all platforms, 80 percent of citations point to .com domains. Source: Profound, 2025, vendor study.
- Engines also cite largely different sources from one another, so being named by ChatGPT does not mean Perplexity or Google will name you. You have to earn each one.
What it means for your business
Being cited is measurably worth money, and the best data here comes from the most neutral source.
- Brands cited inside an AI Overview get about 120 percent more organic clicks per impression than uncited brands on the same query. Source: Seer Interactive, April 2026, 5.47 million queries.
- AI-referred retail traffic converts 60 percent higher than non-AI traffic, generates 53 percent more revenue per visit, and grew 62 percent year over year. Source: Adobe Analytics via Digital Commerce 360, July 2026, based on more than 1 trillion visits to US retail sites. This is the largest, most neutral dataset in this post.
- 94 percent of enterprise marketers plan to increase AEO investment in 2026, with about 12 percent of digital marketing budget already going to it. Source: Conductor CMO survey of 250-plus enterprises, April 2026, vendor survey.
- Trust is still the ceiling: only about 14 percent of shoppers say they would trust an AI recommendation alone to make a purchase (Salsify, 2026). People increasingly start with AI, then verify. So the goal is to be the name AI gives them, then be findable when they check.
What the data does not show
Honesty is the point of a reference page, so here is what we will not claim.
- Neither OpenAI nor Google publishes official cross-advertiser or cross-site citation benchmarks. Any "the average is X" claim is third-party.
- There is no rigorous public study measuring how often AI recommends a specific local business. Be skeptical of anyone quoting a precise local percentage. What is defensible: AI answers name far fewer businesses (usually one to three) than the traditional Google map pack, which we measure monthly for Toronto in our AI citation tracker.
- Most citation and business-impact figures come from SEO vendors who sell AEO tools, so they have an incentive to show impact. We leaned on Pew and Adobe as neutral anchors and labeled the rest. And because the engines change monthly, some 2025 figures may already be stale by the time you read this.
What to actually do about it
The pattern across every credible number above is consistent. Get mentioned, because brand mentions track AI visibility better than backlinks. Keep ranking, because most AI citations still come from the top 10. Be present where each engine looks, which means reviews, Reddit, Wikipedia-grade references, and your own answer-first pages. Then structure those pages so an engine can lift a clean, correct answer without guessing. That is the whole of AEO.
If you want to act on this: check whether AI engines can currently reach and read your site with our AEO score guide, work through the 8 things AI engines check before they cite you, and read how to get recommended by ChatGPT.
How we sourced this
Every figure is attributed to a named source with a date and a type: primary survey (Pew), neutral analytics (Adobe), company disclosure (OpenAI, Google, Microsoft), or vendor study (Ahrefs, Semrush, Surfer, Profound, Conductor, Similarweb). We verified the Pew figures against the live pages, labeled Similarweb figures as estimates because Similarweb does, and excluded several widely-circulated stats (a popular schema-discoverability percentage, a specific AI-traffic conversion multiplier, and various local-recommendation figures) because we could not trace them to a primary source. This page is a snapshot of a fast-moving space; confirm any figure at its source before you quote it.
FAQ
How many people use AI to search in 2026? About half of US adults use AI chatbots and 44 percent have used ChatGPT, with 42 percent using chatbots to search for information (Pew Research, February 2026). ChatGPT reports over 800 million weekly users and Google's Gemini app passed 1 billion monthly users in 2026.
Does AI search reduce website traffic? Yes, measurably, for the query where a summary appears. Pew found Google users click a result link in 8 percent of visits when an AI summary is shown, versus 15 percent without, and click inside the summary just 1 percent of the time (July 2025).
How does AI decide which sources to cite? AI answers cite roughly 5 sources on average, and 52 to 76 percent of those already rank in Google's top 10 (Surfer, Ahrefs). Brand mentions across the web correlate with AI visibility more strongly than backlinks do (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands), and each engine favors a different source pool, so citations must be earned per engine.
Does being cited by AI actually drive business? The available data says yes. Brands cited in an AI Overview get about 120 percent more organic clicks per impression (Seer Interactive), and AI-referred retail traffic converts 60 percent higher than non-AI traffic (Adobe Analytics, over 1 trillion visits, July 2026).
What is the best way to show up in AI search? Earn brand mentions, keep strong organic rankings, be present in the sources each engine trusts (reviews, Reddit, reference sites), and publish answer-first pages an engine can quote cleanly. That combination is answer engine optimization; start by checking whether AI can currently reach and read your site.
